RESUMO

This paper determined the morphometric measurements' reference values and relationship of the optic nerve and cranium in Turkish healthy individuals according to age and sex. Five hundred fifty-nine (280 females and 279 males) patients aged from 2 to 90 years were included in this study. The measurements were taken from patients having brain magnetic resonance images in sagittal, axial, and coronal sections in the radiology department. Eyeball transverse diameter, optic nerve sheath thickness (ONST), optic chiasm length, optic chiasm width, and cranium morphometric measurements of all individuals who participated in the study were taken. Except for the width of the optic chiasm, all measurements showed significant differences between the sexes (P < 0.05). In contrast, all measurement values were higher in males than females, except for the clival angle. According to the result of Pearson correlation analysis, in which the existence of a relationship between ONST and craniometric measurements was evaluated, a low but significant correlation was found between ONST and craniometric measurements (r < 0.4; P < 0.05). In the post hoc test performed to compare the decades, it was seen that the most significant changes in our measurements were in the 2 to 10 age range and the measurement values decreased in old age. We think that revealing the age and sex-related changes in the optic nerve and cranium morphometry of our population anatomically and radiologically will be an important source in terms of creating reference values for our population.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The trachea is a tubular organ lying between larynx and lungs containing smooth muscle, membranes, and cartilage. This paper evaluated the dimessions of the trachea and main bronchi morphometry in healthy adults using Computed Tomography. This retrospective observational study was performed with 170 healthy adult subjects (89 females, 52.35 %; 81 males,47.65 %). The length of the trachea, the anteroposterior and transverse diameter of the trachea and the right and left main bronchi were measured. From these measurements, the trachea shape were calculated and four types of trachea were identified as circular, oval, horseshoe-shaped, and rectangular. All measurements were significantly higher in males than females (excluding tracheal bifurcation angle). According to the value obtained by dividing the anteroposterior by the width of the trachea, tracheal shapes are considered; the circular shape was seen 104 subjects (61.2 %), followed by oval type (34 subjects), horseshoe type (24 subjects) and rectangular type. (8 subjects). Also, the most frequently seen was circular type in both females and males. Hovewer, there was no significant difference between sex in terms of trachea shape. Additionally, a striking finding was that trachea morphometry and morphology showed the significance according to age dependent changes. Trachea measurements were affected several reasons such as used methods, age, sex, or race. This study has many clinical importance as it may reduce the risk of accidental damage to these area by clinicians such as cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthetist, or radiologist.

SUMMARY: Pelvis contributes to both human locomotion and obstetrics, and normal vaginal delivery is associated with a spacious inlet, a large interspinosus diameter. This paper aimed to measure crucial diameters of pelvic ring, and to determine both the prevalence of pelvic types, and labor types including normal vaginal delivery or caesarean section in Turkish healthy females. Additionally, it was aimed to evaluate presence of relationship between pelvic types and pelvic diameters. Labor shape of subjects was obtained from hospital records. This retrospective study was carried out on 165 healthy subjects aged between 18 and 45 years. Anteroposterior diameter of the pelvic inlet (APDI), anteroposterior diameter of the pelvic outlet, sacrum length (SL), sacrum depth, conjugata vera, obstetrical conjugate, the diagonal conjugate, diameter transversa, diameter bispinous, intertuberous diameter were measured. From these measurements, brim index was calculated and decided to gynecoid, anthropoid and platypelloid type. Also, the andoid type was calculated to the ratio of posterior sagittal diameter of the inlet to conjugata obstetrica. 50.91 % of participants has gynecoid type pelvis, followed by 24.85 % anthropoid type, 14.55 % platypelloid, and 9.70 % android type pelvis. There was a significant difference in APDI, SL, SD, Conjugata vera, Conjugata obstetrica, Conjugata diagonalis, Conjugata transversa, diameter bispinous, diameter intertubercularis and Brim index measurements according to pelvic types. the first degree of narrowing (conjugata vera from 11 to 9) was found in 18 pelvises and 12 pelvises with the pathological degree of narrowing bellonged to the platypelloid type followed by android type pelvis with 6 pelvices. The android type pelvis is not appropriate for natural labor and a good assessment of birth canal can reduce the labor risks. Also, only 7 females who delivered with cesarean have gynecoid type pelvic type. The APDI and SL were significantly lower in subjects having pathological narrowing according to conjugata obstetrica values.

In this study, it was aimed to determine the reference values for the healthy Turkish population by evaluating the age-related changes in the morphology and morphometry of Sella Turcica (ST) and the relationship with the body mass index. In addition, it has been investigated whether the morphology and morphometry of this structure vary in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. The study group was consisted of a total of 524 individuals (266 females and 258 males) (426 healthy and 48 with DM) between the ages of 1 and 80, who applied to the Department of Radiology between January 2018 and February 2021. Axial brain computed tomography scans which have no pathology in ST were retrospectively examined. The ST length (STL), height (STH), diameter (STD), processus clinoideus anterior right-left (PCAR_L), processus clinoideus posterior right-left (PCPR_L) did not differ significantly in healthy individuals and individuals with DM (P>0.05). When the ST morphology according to the ST shape classification performed by Meyer Marcotti and colleagues and Axellson and colleagues was evaluated, it was observed that there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups (P>0.05). There was a significant difference in STL, STD values (P<0.05), however, there was no difference in STH, PCAR_L, PCPR_L values between genders (P>0.05). While the distance between STL, STD, PCAR_L showed a significant difference between the decades in all groups, there was no significant difference in the STH, PCPR_L in both classifications (P>0.05). When the relationship between the parameters and body mass index was evaluated, STL, STD, PCAR_L showed a significant difference between the groups (P<0.05). Detailed knowledge of the ST anatomy will be helpful in terms of early diagnosis of diseases that may be related and guiding surgical interventions in this region.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The study purposed to examine the morphometry and morphology of crista galli in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and apply a new analysis, supervised Machine Learning techniques to find the answers to research questions "Can sex be determined with crista galli morphometric measurements?" or "How effective are the crista galli morphometric measurements in determining sex?". Crista galli dimensions including anteroposterior, superoinferior, and laterolateral were measured and carried out on 200 healthy adult subjects (98 females; 102 males) aged between 18-79 years. Also, crista galli was classified with two methods called morphological types and Keros classification. In this study, the Chi-square test, Student's t-test, and Oneway ANOVA were performed. Additionally, Machine Learning techniques were applied. The means of the CGH, CGW, and CGL were found as 14.96 mm; 3.96 mm, and 12.76 mm in males, respectively. The same values were as 13.54 mm; 3.51 mm and 11.59±1.61 mm in females, respectively. The CG morphometric measurements of males were higher than those of females. There was a significant difference between sexes in terms of morphological classification type. Also, when the sex assignment of JRip was analyzed, out of 102 male instances 62 of them were correctly predicted, and for 98 female instances, 70 of them were correctly predicted according to their CG measurements. The JRip found the following classification rule for the given dataset: "if CGH<=14.4 then sex is female, otherwise sex is male". The accuracy of this rule is not high, but it gives an idea about the relationship between CG measurements and sex. Although the issue that CG morphometric measurements can be used in sex determination is still controversial, it was concluded in the analysis that CG morphometric measurements can be used in sex determination. Also, Machine Learning Techniques give an idea about the relationship between CG measurements and sex.

SUMMARY: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between acetabulum morphological measurements and present the reference values of the acetabulum. The study had a retrospective design and was conducted with 234 healthy subjects (108 females; 126 males) aged 18-53 years over a period of 4 years from 2018 to 2022. Eleven measurements including the center- edge angle (CEA), acetabular angle (AA), acetabular depth (AD), acetabular width (AW), dept to width ratio (ADWR), Extrusion A (EA)-B (EB), Extrusion index (EI), the lateral subluxation (LS), peak to edge distance (PED), and roof obliquity (RO) were taken. The p<0.05 value was considered significant. A significant difference was found in CEA, AA, EB, LS, and RO values, while there was no significance in the AD, AW, ADWR, EI, and PED measurements in comparison with acetabular morphometry according to gender. Also, in the evaluation of acetabulum to age-related changes, there was a significant difference in values of the CEA, AA, AD, AW, ADWR, LS, and PED from decades 1 to 5. The knowledge of radiological acetabulum findings is paramount for the diagnosis of hip dysplasia and may be useful for prosthesis, orthopedic and forensic experts. Also, the most interesting finding was that ADWR increased based on age in a directly proportional trend. The most apparent change based on age was seen in CEA (between decades 3-4), LS (decades 1-5), PED (decades 2-4), AD, and AW (decades 2-5).

Splenogonadal fusion (SGF) is a rare congenital malformation, which can be of a continuous or discontinuous type. It is characterized by splenic tissue fused with gonadal tissue. Because it lacks characteristic features, very few cases of SGF have been diagnosed preoperatively. Herein, we present a case with left side SGF who was diagnosed by Tc-nanocolloid spleen scintigraphy.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the normal values of brain ventricles and indices in healthy subjects in our population using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to reveal sex and age related differences. The MRI of two hundred-sixty-five healthy individuals aged between eighteen and eighty-seven years were examined and the midsagittal and axial images were used for measurements. The measurements were performed from MRI on a Workstation. The following mean values of brain ventricles and indices were observed; frontal horn width (FHW) (33.14 mm); third (3rd) ventricle width (TVW) (3.37 mm); fourth ventricle anteroposterior width (FVWAP) (9.93 mm); fourth ventricle transverse width (FVWT) (12.40 mm); and the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull (TIDS) (128.75 mm) in females. The same dimensions were 34.85 mm, 3.91 mm, 10.26 mm, 12.81 mm, and 134.68 mm in males, respectively. There were statistically significantly differences in the frontal horn width, third (3rd) ventricle width, and the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull values in between sexes. The mean values of Evans' index which obtanied with maximum width between the frontal horns of the lateral ventricles divided by the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull were found as 0.280 ±0.172 in females; whereas the same dimensions were calculated 0.276±0.161 in males. These values were lower in healthy male subjects than females, however; there were no found significantly difference between groups. Present findings obtained from MRI are necessary anatomical baseline data for interpreting pathological changes, planning surgery, and determining presence and progress of some neurological diseases.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of color Doppler sonography (CDS) in the diagnosis of extracranial vertebral artery dissections (EVADs). One hundred and fifty consecutive patients (age range 21-51 years, mean 44 years) with a clinical suspicion of vertebral artery dissection (VAD) were included in this study. All patients underwent CDS of vertebral arteries as the first-line imaging modality. Cervical T1-weighted fat-saturated axial MR images served as the gold standard. Of the 150 patients with a clinical suspicion of VAD, 27 patients were ultimately diagnosed with EVADs based on fat-saturated T1-weighted MR imaging. MR imaging was considered positive when crescentic hyperintensity (methemoglobin signal) was demonstrated at the wall of the vertebral artery. CDS was positive in 21 of these 27 patients and revealed either intramural hematoma or a dissecting membrane with two lumina. The most frequent site of involvement was the V1 to proximal V2 segment. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of CDS in the diagnosis of EVADs were 77.8, 98.4, 91.3, and 95.3%, respectively. CDS is a reliable diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of EVADs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of preoperative magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the detection of malignant liver neoplasms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of 23 patients who had undergone hepatic resection or liver transplantation in the last two years were evaluated retrospectively. All MR imaging studies were performed with a 1.5 T magnet using a phased-array multi-coil. The MR imaging protocol was comprised of fat-suppressed T2-weighted TSE imaging, GRE with and without fat-suppressed T1-weighted imaging, and gadolinium-enhanced multiphasic dynamic GRE imaging. Images were reviewed on a PACS workstation by two independent abdominal radiologists. The image review was conducted on a lesion-by-lesion as well as segment-by-segment basis. MR imaging findings were compared with the results of pathology studies and intraoperative ultrasound examinations. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) of MR imaging and interobserver variation were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 59 malignant liver lesions in 23 patients were identified by pathology studies and intraoperative sonographic examinations. Sensitivity and PPV of MR imaging on a lesion-by-lesion analysis were 68-86% and 85-89%, respectively; kappa=0.175 and agreement was 65.8% in these analyses. Sensitivity of MR images for small ( < 1cm) lesions was 13-67% and for large ( > 3 cm) lesions it was 100%. In segment-by-segment analysis, sensitivity and specificity of MR images were 87-95% and 97-98%, respectively; kappa=0.207 and agreement was 76.1%. Sensitivity and PPV of MR imaging in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma were 46-85% and 55-73%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Although MR imaging is generally a highly accurate method for the diagnosis of malignant liver tumors, it has some difficulty in detecting small lesions and hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic livers.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to detect the diagnostic value of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in different pediatric cerebral diseases involving the cerebral white and gray matter and to compare the diffusion properties with age-matched normal children. Conventional and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging were performed in 21 children with various neurologic disorders and 25 normal control subjects. Apparent diffusion coefficients were measured from the brain lesions and 12 normal-appearing white and gray matter areas in the study group. Twelve normal-appearing areas were also measured in the control group. Apparent diffusion coefficient values obtained from the normal subjects were similar to values described in the literature but were significantly different from the control subjects. Apparent diffusion coefficient values for the neurodegenerative disease group (n = 8), the anoxic encephalopathy group (n = 4), the subacute sclerosing panencephalitis group (n = 4), the acute disseminated encephalomyelitis group (n = 3), and the encephalitis group (n = 2) were respectively between 0.29-1.85 x 10(-5) cm2/s, 0.13-1.87 x 10(-5) cm2/s, 0.96-1.57 x 10(-5) cm2/s, 0.49-0.73 x 10(-5) cm2/s, and 0.42-1.50 x 10(-5) cm2/s. Although this study is limited because of the size of the patient sample and disease heterogeneity, diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging provides useful and complementary information regarding the degree of involvement in different pediatric neurologic disorders.
